Professor Narinder Nirula of Patiala introduced him to the Gayaki
(vocal) style of Sitar evolved by Ustad Vilayat Khan Sahib. In 1974
under the auspices of His Holiness Sri Satguru Jagjit Singh, the spiritual
head of the Namdhari Sikhs, he became the disciple of Ustad Vilayat
Khan Sahib in a special ceremony in Dehradun, India.
Ustad Vilayat Khan Sahib generously provided access to the rich musical style of the Imdad Khani
Gharana. Dharambir got immense love and guidance from the Ustad and as a result of his dedication
and the blessings of the masters he was invited for Ganda Bandhan (traditional Initiation ceremony)
in Bombay in 1979. Dharambir's relationship with the ustad is an ongoing one and he is considered to
be one of the foremost disciples of Ustad Vilayat Khan.
